Why I became a Reiki Master

My path to Reiki was a bit of a bumbling journey – in fact, I would say that I stumbled into Reiki. Long before I knew what Reiki or energy healing was, I learned to play with energy and my energetic field. I had no idea what I was doing, but sometimes in meditation or on the dancefloor in a club, I’d experiment with holding and expanding energy. However, I never really thought more of it. It wasn’t until I was in the midst of a mental health crisis and burnout, struggling with anxiety and depression, that I came to find energy healing.

I’d been in therapy for the greater part of two years at that point, and while it was helping me immensely, I felt that it alone wasn’t enough. I was recommended by a close friend that I visit a chakra energy healer, which at the time sounded so obscure and mysterious that I felt resistance to going. I didn’t know what a chakra was, let alone that it could need healing – but I was at my wit’s end and I figured “why not give it a go?”

I’ll be honest, as a recovering catholic I feel wary of anything seeming remotely like organized religion. I had doubts that energy healing could work. My first energy healing session was actually done by a Pranic Healer, which is a different kind of energy healing than Reiki. I had no idea what to expect.

My first session completely blew my mind. I had some of the trippiest experiences of my life (without the aid of any drugs!). I had visions and deeply buried memories surface, experienced some of the most ecstatic and purest joy and deepest grief I’d ever felt. I felt my body twitching and moving by itself, as if each movement was slowly joggling and eroding layers of mud and muck from my being.

I left that session in a daze, with my mind unable to understand what had just happened. I decided to stop trying to make sense of it and just sat with the experience. I knew I’d stumbled on something big. I had two more Pranic energy healing sessions before I found Reiki a few months later.

A Reiki Master in Copenhagen was offering free Reiki distance treatments at the beginning of the corona pandemic. The session was beautiful, profound and loving. I had similar experiences to those in my Pranic healing sessions, but overall, it felt gentler and a little more nurturing.

After this session something stirred in me – I felt called to learn energy healing, in particular Reiki. I searched for teachers in Berlin, eventually finding my Reiki Master, Romana. We had a wonderful distance session and after that I knew I had to sign up for her Level 1 course.

Reiki has brought much to my life. Since learning and regularly channelling Reiki, I feel I am overall more balanced, grounded, healthy and happy. I use it as a part of my self-care routine, which has helped immensely during times of stress and imbalance. I also find that it’s been integral to my personal healing.

It has also brought many big changes to my life. It seems that as you progress through the Reiki journey, anything out of alignment is cleared from your life. This process is both wonderful and sometimes painful, as many people and life situations have dramatically changed for me since learning Reiki.

For example, after completing Level 2, it didn’t take long until my work life completely changed. I left a steady 9-5 job to pursue my dream of establishing my life coaching and Reiki energy healing practice.

I am very grateful to be on this path and to share Reiki with others. Reiki is such a powerful and incredible tool! It is my sincere hope that I can be of service to those who are on their healing journeys.
